Michael Sabin was born in Elmira New York in 1966. He has been an artist for most of his life starting in Elementary School. He has also taken various classes in figure drawing and oil painting at Arnot Art Museum, now discovering a love for making mosaic art at age 42.
Other skills and trades aquired include drafting, hand glass blowing and forming hot (molten glass).
Michael worked at Steuben Crystal from 1990 to 1997 where he was an assistant to the design team drafting one of a kind commission pieces and glass (hand cooler) animals for production. His final drawings signed and approved by the designer were turned into production pieces. Other job duties included model shop foam models for pre-production commission works, packaging, and shipping crate design.
Other skills of the glass trade include hand blown glass and the forming process which Michael is a part of today. Currently employed at World Kitchen Inc. Michael is a supervisor assistant, forming feeder operator, trainer, and an integral part of the square/round, light bakeware products made from Corelle. Corelle is manufactured in Corning, N.Y at World Kitchen Inc. Pressware Plant. Michael has been there for almost 20yrs now.
Michael Sabin at age 42yrs has found a new passion for mosaic art, making his first piece six years ago with his son Marc Sabin (age 7) with tile cutters. Marc enjoyed cutting the tiles for his father to assemble the first of the Jesus mosaic crosses. Today Michael (self taught) cuts the mosaic pcs on a diamond blade wet saw. Pieces are of slate, ceramic, stone, Italian stained glass. These are then mounted on cement backer board to withstand time and the elements. All mosaics are framed with black anodized aluminum to mount as a wall hanging. Current works are of a life/death motif, now producing still lifes and some nudes. All mosaic works are for sale.
